I have been couped up for a few weeks now editing & processing images, some of which date back to July 08. The joys of the digital age! To add to my woes, I have a gammy foot, and a visit to a local podiatrist has, if anything made it worse. So much so, I am walking around doing the dodgiest impression of John Wayne you have ever seen.
So why, you may ask am I standing on the side of Cliff with a torch waiting for dawn? I don’t really know. Ok I do, I’m a landscape photographer and capturing good light is what we do!
The best light of the day is in the morning. There is no point getting out of bed and chasing early morning light, you have got to be there and wait for it. Chase it and more often than not you lose it.
Right, enough of my preaching. I am not Bono!

As I mentioned I am on a cliff in Portrane County Dublin. A place I haven’t been to in a few years despite it being twenty minutes from my front door. Over-looking the Irish sea and with views to Lambay Island and Howth, it is a wonderful location. Its rocky shoreline and hidden coves coupled with its views to Lambay Island make it a great location for photography.
Set up and more than ever leaning on a tripod, I have two Singh Ray grads, a 3-stop and a 2-stops graduated ND grads stacked on top of each other. Why? I want to darken the sky down, and to tone down the highlights in the sky.
As ever the the camera is set to shoot RAW, ISO 100 is set and in this instance the autofocus has been turned off. With the tide on the turn, I set an aperture of f13 and a shutter speed of 30 seconds, I fire the shutter. Quick check of the preview and the histogram and I am happy.
The joys of the digital age!
“In the Field Workshops”
Like the sound of In the Field? If so why not join me on one of the number of “In the Field’ photographic workshops around Ireland this year. These workshops come in two formats, a full day one to one workshop and a less intense In the Field Photo shoot which typically take place at dawn or dusk. The dawn & dusk sessions serve as an introduction to the more intense all day sessions. Photographers will typically join me on location shoots and photograph with me. A typical session lasts no more than one or two hours.
The one to one workshops start early and finish late. Lots of photography and processing will be the order of the day. email: info@photoimagery.net for more information
