March 2007

Donegal in North West Ireland ranks as one of my favourite places on earth. From a photographers point of view it’s a form of utopia. From the wonderful beaches to its hilly interior it’s a must for any photographer.

Personally the problem I find with Donegal is that it has so much to offer a photographer that it is sometimes hard to decide what to photograph.

Glenveagh National Park in Donegal is one place I find myself returning to over and over again. The park set on over 16000 hectares of mountains, lakes and glens is a wonderful place to switch of and get back to nature. The park also serves as the home of the project to reintroduce the Golden Eagle back into Ireland.
It is such a beautiful place that it is one of those places where you could spend a year photographing and never get bored by the subject. I guess all photographers have one of these places. Glenveagh is mine.

glenveaRecently I was lucky to be there for an early morning photographic trip. Arriving just before 7a.m to get into a position I had scouted the day before. There I stood an Irish man and his camera only to happy to be away from the city traffic and rat race I had left behind.
Standing with camera ready I made my first exposures as the sunlight raked the landscape as the clouds rolled in and out of the valley. That morning I made a handful of exposures, before the rain that threatened finally came in.

Cold and wet I returned to base, happy as any man could be.
