Morning dew has dampened the grass. The dawn chorus is in full song. Iris’s
are in full bloom. Dragon and Damsel flies rest on reeds waiting for the
morning sun to warm their wings. Swallows swoop along the river, and fish
flip at the waters surface. A beautiful summer’s morning, the kind that makes you feel great to be alive!!
Right, enough of sounding like Hemingway or the like. I’m knackered, I just finished up a week in the rat race six hours earlier and now at 4a.m Im in situ on the banks of the river Boyne in Co Meath Ireland. The purpose of this trip was to capture an image that captures both the feel of summer and a sense of place of the area.
Newgrange famous for the winter solstice, and the surrounding landscape is my target. It is one of those places that is hard to get a good photograph of. Sure its easy to plonk a tripod and camera down in its grounds and snap a few frames. I wanted to try and capture the surrounding landscape, while retaining Newgrange’s place in the local environment.
For this shot, I took up position in amongst the reeds and the wonderful flowering yellow Iris. Framing the image with the smaller burial mound to the left and Newgrange off centre.
My trusty Singh Ray ND grads are in use helping to keep a bit of contrast in the sky. Then it was a case of doing what every landscape photographer does; wait!! for the light.
