January 2008

Happy New Year to all.

It’s that time of year again when people pledge and break commitments within days. I have made a few of my own this year which I have to keep. You see I have a solo exhibition coming up later this year, and I have talked myself into believing that I need more images for it!!!

So over the next couple of months I have promised myself a return trip to a number of locations that have haunted me. Every photographer has these places. They are places you have tried to photograph many times before. But somehow and for whatever reason you never manage to capture an image that you are truly happy with.
Fanad lighthouse is one such location. Nestled at the top of County Donegal the place cries out to be photographed. It is one of those unique locations where you could spend a week taking pictures, yet every image would be different.
Fanaad Lighthouse

As December passed into January I arrived at Fanad determined to capture an image that I was happy with.

Arriving long before sunrise I sat for what seemed like an age waiting for dawn to break. Ocean waves crashed all around me as I made my first exposures. The image you see was the first of the morning. A 30 second exposure was required as light levels where so low. The resulting effect is not everyone’s cup of tea. But when light levels are that low you have no other choice.

That’s it for January – I am hopefully of to Inisheer to visit another old friend that has haunted me.
