Woods have always been a place of interest especially to children, but how about grown men? Yep we have all heard of Hansel and Gretel, but have you heard about Peter and Liam? Yes I know it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
Liam, like many of us has just discovered the joys of photography, much to his wife’s annoyance. If I am ever found mysteriously dead, question her first!
Anyway back to the woods. Last week Liam and I headed out on his weekly learning trip. As we all know February in Ireland can be a pretty murky time, lots of grey skies, woeful light and plenty of rain. A challenge for an experienced photographer at the best of times never mind a novice. But a trip to any wood has its own little gems just waiting to be discovered. Throw in some mist and hey presto, magic!
Mist in any landscape is a photographers dream, but in the woods it brings a surreal feel. From a photographic point of view you would find it hard not to be inspired.Trees become haunting figures, distracting objects fade away as the mist weaves its way through the forest.
Each turn of the head brings an opportunity to photographic something. It’s time to experiment; be it with apertures, angles or composition. To be honest, its well and good reading about techniques and composition in books and magazines, but nothing beats being out in the field and honing your craft.
Anyway folks that’s all for this month, I guess what I am trying to say is get out and shoot no matter what the weather. Film is cheap, or should that be memory is cheap?!
