As an Irish landscape photographer, I typically display a limited amount of work on my site www.photoimagery.net. Normally after a shoot, I process the images, upload one or two to the site and send the rest off to four or five stock agencies.

As of late I have been exploring ways of showing more of the images that don't appear on the photoimagery site to the general public. With that in mind, I have decided that over the course of the year to create a number of photographic slideshows and post them to my photographic blog.

After all there is no excuse for not doing it. I like many other Irish landscape photographers are blessed with some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. Throw in the ever changing light and Ireland is a landscape photographers paradise. So why not show the place off.

Irish Landscape - Tree by Moonlight

There is something about winter that makes every landscape photographer excited and possibly slightly insane. This is even more so if you are an Irish landscape photographer. Proper sub zero winters in Ireland, especially when they are topped up with a dollop of snow are rare.

So recently, as the Christmas festivities began the winter really kicked in and temperatures plummeted. For two weeks it remained that way. Roads became ice rinks, mountains became practically impassible and every radio news station advised people against making non essential journeys. Despite the conditions I found myself frequently driving the icy back roads and snowy mountain roads in the pursuit of pictures.

One such journey I made during the cold spell was to a location outside of Donore County Meath. It is a location I have often visited but never photographed. However on this occasion I found myself standing on the steepest of incline with only a torch and the moon guiding the way. Above me a lone tree stood eerily against a backdrop of a moonlit sky. This was the picture I had hoped for.

For this shot I wanted to create an image that would make maximum use of the dramatic sky against the stark outline of the land . I also wanted to capture the movement of the clouds to inject some drama into the scene.

With this in mind and I set an exposure of thirty seconds @F13, and as the clouds began to cover the full moon I pressed the shutter.

The thirty second exposure was just enough to create drama in the sky. But perhaps most importantly it was an effective way of controlling any blown highlights that may have been caused by the full moon.

The lens I used for the shot was the Canon 70-200F4L on a Canon 5DMK11 at ISO 640.

Experimenting with Time-Lapse

It has been a week of experiments. A week that has seen me make my first attempt at Time-Lapse photography while standing on an icy bridge over looking the Boyne suspension Bridge near Drogheda County Louth Ireland. It was also the week were I made my first attempt at shooting star trails.

Why I decided to do this during one of the coldest Irish winters in years I will never know. But hey you gotta start sometime.

The time-lapse attempt was a lot of fun and it opens up a whole new world of creative possibilities. The result is far from perfect, however I have promised myself a return visit this week to try and improve on my earlier attempt.

Despite all the experimenting and traveling on icy roads my favourite image of the week was taken in the woods across from my home. The image of a frozen leaf which you can see below occurred when I dropped a lens cap and noticed the leaf and its delicate frosted coating.

I guess I need to start looking down more!

Details of Irish Landscape photographer Peter McCabes 2010 Irish photographic workshops are now online.

In 2010 Peter will host a number of photographic workshops based in County Donegal Ireland:

1 The "In the field" workshop. Will be located in the Gweedore region of NorthWest Donegal. The region is a landscape photographers dream and gives participants the chance to photograph wonderful wild landscapes, golden sandy beaches, and its Atlantic ravaged coastline.

This workshop is a weekend event running from August 20th to August 22nd 2010 and is limited to five people.

The workshops are suitable for anyone who wants to improve their photography or for anyone who simply wishes to be immersed in the beautiful Donegal landscape.

The course is priced at €690 and includes Hotel accommodation, breakfast, dinner on both evenings and transport to all locations which feature as part of the workshop.

2. The second workshop I will host is entitled "The Photo House". The concept behind the Photo House is that participants come and live together with me in a self catering cottage living and breathing photography. The days will be fun and adventure filled and when the light is gone the the evenings will be spent talking photography and processing the days work.

The “Photo house” will run in the last weekend of June and the first weekend of September 2010 in North West Donegal and is priced at €390. This workshop is limited to groups of three to four people.

The cost includes accommodation, food and transport to a range of exciting photographic locations.

Starling Roost Bettystown Ireland

Last Tuesday while returning from work I made my way home via Bettystown in County Meath Ireland in the hope of photographing the amazing Starling roost that gathers each year in Bettystown.

Each evening as the sun goes down these birds gather in their tens of thousands and perform intricate manoeuvres in the evening sky before settling down for the night. It is an amazing spectacle to witness, and the noise is deafening.

Interesting Photographic week

It has been an interesting photographic week for me.

First up I gave a talk on my photography to Mid-Louth Camera Club who are based in Dunleer Co. Louth Ireland. They are a great bunch of people and I really enjoyed the evening. On the night I displayed approximately 50 images and used FotoMagico to put together a slideshow of the images.

FotoMagico is a piece of software that I have only started to use, and am looking forward to exploring its full potential.

It has also been the week, that has seen me receive my first image requests via Twitter. I need to think about how I can use Twitter to best advertise my images to potential buyers.

If anyone has any ideas then I'd welcome their suggestions.

September 5th 2009 seen the running of the 50th Liffey Descent. The event which draws competitors from as far away as South Africa and Canada and is a real photographic spectacle.

The weir at Straffan is the ideal location for sport action photographs. Located in the grounds of the K-Club the weir is canoes own version of horse racings beechers brook. At the weir many a canoeist is thrown from their boat, many a boat is broken, while many shoot by as if it is not there.

A number of weeks back while trying to update my website I decided enough was enough it was time to call in a professional web designer. Time wise it was no longer practical to try and manage the site with Dreamweaver and Lightroom. The whole site badly needed a refresh and modernisation.

So after some thought I turned to an old friend Adam Williams over at AWx2d and gave him the gig of ripping the old site apart and creating something new.

Donegal " In the Field" Photographic Workshop

June 20th 2009 saw me standing amongst the wild and beautiful countryside of Donegal on one of my one to one "In the Field" Irish Photographic workshops.

The workshop began early in the depths of the Poison Glen and took in Glenveagh National Park before finishing up in the town of Bunbeg.

Despite the intermittent showers some excellent images where captured by the participant. His shot of a view from Glenveagh as the rain begins to come in is my personal favourite.

The workshop while intensive was a lot of fun and covered topics including

Shutterspeed

Stephen & Claire Wedding - Wedding Photography by Irish Photographer Peter McCabe

A few weeks back I had a great time photographing the wedding of Stephen & Claire in the Church at Donabate Co.Dublin Ireland, followed by the wedding reception at Finnstown House.

Despite dropping a flash gun some great pictures were captured. On the day the couple where relaxed, the weather was great and the guests had a great time.

It has been a hectic week.

Earlier this week I spent four days in County Mayo shooting images in and around the Galway / Mayo border for stock agencies. Early morning starts only to be pounded by wind, hail and rain where the order of the day. But the light was fantastic so I was happy. Keep an eye on the site for some updates later in the week.

Saturday May 9th saw me in Glendalough Co.Wicklow to host one of my " In the Field" photographic workshops. The workshops are designed for people looking to improve their knowledge of how a camera works and for people looking to hone photographic field craft. Typically the sessions last no more than two hours and are best suited to beginners.

Last Friday, I held the first of my "In the Field" one hour photographic workshops in St Stephen's Green Dublin.

The workshops are designed for participants who lead busy schedules and who may not have the time for one of my full day In the Field workshops. The workshops typically last anywhere between one & two hours and can take place before (as was the case on Friday) or after work or even during lunch.

These workshops are aimed at beginners looking to enhance their knowledge of topics including:

Tides Useful App for the iphone/iTouch

As a photographer who photographs a lot of seascapes I spend a lot of time looking up tidal and sunrise times.

However life just got a whole lot easier with the discovery of a little app for the iPhone & iPod touch. The app simply call Tides shows low and high tide times along with sunrise and sunset times for over 4000 locations worldwide.

Drogheda Photographic Society Lightroom Workshop

I have been invited to the Drogheda Photographic Society to give a talk and demonstration on Adobe's Lightroom product. As regular readers of my " In the Field " will know it is a programme I use a lot, and acts as a great Raw converter and data base manager.

As a former member of the club it will be nice to meet some old friends and catch up with them.

The workshop will take place on Thursday April 23rd in the clubs premises at the Millmount centre in Drogheda and will start at 8.30PM. See you there!

Earlier today (18/02/09), I gave a talk to a number of fourth year architectural students in UCD Dublin. Entitled "Light in the Landscape" the talk addressed the changes in light one may observe throughout the day and seasons.

During the conversation, I gave the students an insight to the tools a landscape photographer may use while sharing my own observations and experiences of working with light under Irish skies.
